Bihar Woman Gang-Raped in Ambulance After Fainting During Home Guard Exam; Two Arrested

A woman candidate taking part in Bihar’s Home Guard recruitment process was allegedly gang-raped by an ambulance driver and technician while being transported to hospital after fainting during a physical test in Bodh Gaya, police said on Friday. The crime took place on July 24, when the woman collapsed during a race at the BMP-3 parade ground and was evacuated in an ambulance stationed at the recruitment site.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anand Kumar, the survivor courageously reported the assault to the police soon after, prompting immediate action. The two accused, identified as Vinay Kumar (ambulance driver) and Ajit Kumar (technician), were arrested within two hours of the complaint. Police formed a special investigation team headed by Bodh Gaya SDPO Saurabh Jaiswal, while a forensic team collected evidence and CCTV footage from the area to help identify the perpetrators.
An FIR has been lodged at Bodh Gaya police station and the investigation is ongoing. “The investigation will be completed promptly, a charge sheet will be filed soon, and a fast-track trial will be pursued to ensure strict legal action against both the accused,” SSP Anand Kumar told reporters.
The brutal assault has triggered outrage across Bihar, with citizens demanding accountability and safety protocols for candidates in recruitment drives. Social media is flooded with calls for justice and stronger safeguards for women in state-run processes. Bodh Gaya authorities have promised a thorough probe, while public figures and advocacy groups have urged for robust reforms in ambulance and public safety standards, recalling previous instances of custodial or in-transit assaults in India.
Police officials insist that the survivor is being offered medical care and counselling. Security measures have been stepped up at the recruitment site and hospitals in the region to prevent further incidents.
