China Calls for Closer India Ties: ‘Dragon and Elephant Must Dance Together’

As U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs strain China’s economy, Beijing is turning to India for a closer partnership. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, speaking at a press conference during China’s annual parliamentary session, urged cooperation, saying, “A cooperative pas de deux of the dragon and the elephant is the only right choice for both sides.” He emphasized that China and India should support each other to oppose “hegemonism and power politics” and strengthen the Global South.

Wang’s comments come amid rising tensions with the U.S., where Trump’s policies have hit Chinese exports hard. He slammed these tariffs as the “law of the jungle” in a separate statement, vowing a firm response. Against this backdrop, China sees India—a fellow economic giant—as a key ally. “When China and India join hands, democracy in global relations grows stronger,” Wang said.

The push follows progress in India-China relations after a four-year military standoff in eastern Ladakh. Last October, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Kazan, Russia, agreeing to ease border tensions. Troops have since withdrawn from Depsang and Demchok, the final friction points. Wang credited this breakthrough to both leaders’ guidance, noting it has sparked more exchanges and cooperation.

This year marks 75 years of India-China diplomatic ties, and Wang hinted at plans to celebrate it with fresh momentum. Last month, he met India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in Johannesburg, where both pledged to rebuild trust and boost cultural ties. Jaishankar welcomed the progress, stressing India’s commitment to peace along the border.

Despite Trump’s offer to mediate during Modi’s recent White House visit, India insists on handling the issue directly with China. Wang agreed, saying the border dispute shouldn’t define their relationship. “As ancient civilizations, we can keep the peace and focus on development,” he added. With both nations eyeing growth and stability, this “dragon and elephant dance” could reshape regional dynamics.
