The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced the postponement of the UGC-NET December 2024 examination originally scheduled for January 15, 2025. The decision was made considering requests from various stakeholders, as the date coincided with major festivals like Pongal, Makar Sankranti, and Makara Pongal, celebrated extensively in southern states of India.

The postponement was confirmed through an official circular released by the NTA on January 13, 2025. The revised date for the examination will be announced soon. However, the NTA clarified that exams scheduled for January 16, 2025, will proceed as planned. Candidates are advised to stay updated by regularly visiting the official NTA website.

The NTA received multiple representations, including one from the Students’ Federation of India (SFI). In their appeal, SFI leaders Mayukh Biswas and V.P. Sanu highlighted the overlap of the exam dates with culturally significant festivals. They emphasized the need for inclusivity and practical scheduling to accommodate students from regions where these festivals hold great importance.
