GBS Outbreak In Pune : 170 Cases, 5 Deaths, Latest Update On GBS
In the bustling city of Pune, India, an unusual health crisis has emerged with the outbreak of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS). This rare condition, where the body’s immune system attacks its own nerves, has been making headlines recently. According to a post by ANI on X (formerly Twitter), as of February 6, 2025, there have been 170 suspected cases and 5 suspected deaths due to GBS in Pune. Out of these, 132 are confirmed cases. This situation has raised concerns among residents and health authorities alike.
What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome?
GBS is an autoimmune disorder that affects the peripheral nervous system, leading to muscle weakness, tingling sensations, and in severe cases, paralysis that can start in the legs and arms and spread to the rest of the body. While recovery is possible, some patients might experience long-term effects.
The Outbreak in Pune
The outbreak’s distribution across Pune is quite telling:
- 33 patients are from Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).
- 86 cases have been reported in newly added villages within the PMC area.
- 22 patients from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).
- 21 from Pune Rural and 8 from other districts.
This spread shows how GBS has affected both urban and rural areas, indicating a possibly widespread contamination issue or a common exposure source.

Healthcare Response
In response, local authorities have been proactive. 62 patients have been discharged, while 61 are currently in ICU and 20 are on ventilators. This distribution underscores the severity of the cases, with a significant number requiring intensive care.

The Pune Municipal Corporation, supported by the World Health Organization (WHO), has stepped up with public health interventions. These include:
- Promoting food and hand hygiene.
- Ensuring safe water supplies.
These measures aim to manage the disease spread and prevent further cases. The government has also deployed rapid response teams to collect samples and conduct surveillance in affected areas.
