Jasprit Bumrah Crowned ICC Cricketer of the Year 2024
Jasprit Bumrah has etched his name into cricket history by securing the ICC Cricketer of the Year 2024 award on January 28, becoming only the fifth Indian to achieve this honor following legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli. Beating out formidable competitors like Travis Head, Joe Root, and Harry Brook, Bumrah’s exceptional performance throughout 2024 has been nothing short of spectacular.
The 31-year-old from Ahmedabad was a force to reckon with in international cricket, amassing 86 wickets in just 21 matches. His prowess was particularly evident in Test cricket, where he captured 71 wickets in 13 matches, including five away games. This performance not only made him the leading wicket-taker of the year but also propelled him to the No. 1 spot in the ICC Test bowler’s rankings.
Bumrah’s impact wasn’t limited to Tests; he also shone in T20Is, taking 15 wickets in eight matches, significantly contributing to India’s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph. His all-around excellence earned him the Player of the Tournament award at the T20 World Cup, which took place from June 1 to 29 in the West Indies and USA.

His leadership was on full display when he led India to a dominant 295-run victory over Australia in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Perth’s Optus Stadium. Bumrah also set a new benchmark by surpassing Ravichandran Ashwin’s record for the highest number of wickets in a single World Test Championship (WTC) edition.
While Joe Root scored 1556 runs in 17 Tests, showing his versatility with the bat and ball, and Harry Brook contributed 1100 runs in 12 Tests, Bumrah’s all-format dominance was undeniable. Travis Head, despite his century in the ODI World Cup 2023 final, couldn’t outshine Bumrah’s consistent performance across cricket’s formats.
