Lashkar-e-Taiba’s Top Terrorist Abu Qatal Shot Dead in Pakistan
Abu Qatal, a most-wanted Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative and key planner of terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, was killed by unidentified gunmen in Pakistan on Saturday night. The close aide of 26/11 Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed was gunned down, marking a significant blow to the banned terror outfit.
The killing occurred late Saturday, though details about the location and assailants remain unclear. Abu Qatal, appointed as LeT’s Chief Operational Commander by Saeed, orchestrated several high-profile attacks in India. His death comes amidst heightened security operations targeting LeT networks across the region.
Qatal led the June 9, 2024, attack on a bus carrying pilgrims from the Shiv Khori temple in Reasi, Jammu and Kashmir. The assault killed nine people and injured over 40, drawing widespread condemnation. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) identified him as a central figure in the operation.

The NIA also named Qatal in its chargesheet for the January 1, 2023, Rajouri attack in Dhangri village. The twin assault—an initial shooting followed by an IED blast—claimed seven lives, including two children. Three Pakistan-based LeT handlers were charged alongside Qatal for targeting civilians and security forces.
Under Saeed’s direct orders, Qatal executed major terror strikes in Kashmir, focusing on minority communities and military personnel. His role made him a top target for Indian security agencies, including the Army. Multiple agencies had been tracking his movements for years due to his extensive terror activities.
Pakistani authorities have not released an official statement on the killing. The identity of the gunmen and the motive behind the attack remain under investigation, with speculation about internal rivalries or external operations. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident as of Sunday morning.
Qatal’s elimination could disrupt LeT’s operations in Jammu and Kashmir, though the group may seek to retaliate. Indian agencies are likely to monitor developments closely, while Pakistan’s response to the killing will be key. Further details on the circumstances of his death are awaited as inquiries continue.
