The grand Mahakumbh 2025 in Prayagraj continues to draw an overwhelming number of devotees. On its eighth day, over 2.27 million pilgrims visited the sacred grounds of the Sangam Triveni by 8 am, as per official figures released by the Uttar Pradesh government. Among these, one million Kalpvasis and 1.27 million other devotees performed the holy ritual of taking a dip in the sacred waters.

Despite the chilly weather conditions in Prayagraj, the enthusiasm of pilgrims remained undeterred. As of January 19, more than 82.6 million pilgrims have taken the holy dip at Sangam Triveni since the Mahakumbh began on January 13. Monday morning witnessed massive gatherings at the sacred confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mystical Saraswati rivers, highlighting the undying devotion of attendees.

The Mahakumbh is far from over, with four major Shahi Snans (royal baths) yet to take place. These auspicious bathing dates are anticipated to attract even larger crowds:

  • January 29 (Mauni Amavasya)
  • February 3 (Basant Panchami)
  • February 12 (Maghi Purnima)
  • February 26 (Maha Shivaratri)

These Shahi Snans hold immense spiritual significance, with millions of devotees expected to participate in these once-in-a-lifetime events.

On Sunday, an unfortunate incident occurred at the Gita Press camp, where a fire broke out due to the explosion of three cooking gas cylinders. Thankfully, no casualties were reported, as approximately 100 people present at the site were safely evacuated.

Uttar Pradesh Minister AK Sharma expressed gratitude for the blessings of Maa Ganga, which ensured no loss of life. However, the fire did destroy 70 to 80 huts and 8 to 10 tents, according to Vivek Chaturvedi, Additional District Magistrate of Mahakumbh Mela.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally inquired about the situation and expressed his relief that all attendees were safe.

The Mahakumbh 2025, scheduled to continue until February 26, is a testament to India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Despite challenges, the event exemplifies faith and devotion as millions of pilgrims gather to seek blessings and participate in the world’s largest congregation.
