Maharashtra Woman Gives Birth on Bus, Throws Newborn Out of Window; Baby Dies

A 19-year-old woman gave birth inside a moving sleeper bus in Maharashtra’s Parbhani on Tuesday and, along with a man claiming to be her husband, threw the newborn out of the bus window, leading to the infant’s death.

The incident took place around 6:30 AM on the Pathri-Selu Road when the woman, identified as Ritika Dhere, was travelling from Pune to Parbhani with Altaf Shaikh in a Sant Prayag Travels sleeper coach. According to police officials, Dhere went into labour during the journey and delivered a baby boy inside the bus. Soon after, the couple allegedly wrapped the baby in a cloth and threw him out of the window.

The matter came to light when an alert citizen on the road noticed the wrapped infant and immediately informed the police by dialling 112. The child was found dead at the spot where he was thrown.

A police patrol team intercepted the bus and detained the couple after a preliminary investigation. The bus driver told police that he saw something being thrown out of the window, but the man had claimed it was vomit as the woman felt nauseous during the journey.

“During questioning, the couple admitted they threw the newborn as they could not raise the child,” a police official said, adding that the fall caused the death of the baby.

The couple claimed to be husband and wife but could not produce documents to prove their relationship, police said. They have been living in Pune for the past one and a half years but are originally from Parbhani.

After their detention, the woman was taken to a hospital for treatment. A case has been registered under section 94 (3), (5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for concealment of birth by secret disposal of a dead body at Pathri Police Station. The investigation is ongoing.

Police have served a notice to the accused as further procedures are carried out.
