Three days after communal violence erupted in Nagpur, the city police lifted the curfew in two areas and relaxed it in five others on March 20, 2025, signaling a gradual return to normalcy.

Nagpur Commissioner of Police Ravinder Singal ordered the lifting of the curfew in Nandanvan and Kapil Nagar police station areas from 2 PM on Thursday. Additionally, a relaxation was permitted in Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, and Imambada areas from 2 PM to 4 PM.

The unrest began on March 17 following protests by right-wing groups demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Rumours of a holy book’s desecration during the agitation led to widespread clashes, injuring several people.

Despite the easing of restrictions, over 2,000 security personnel remain deployed across Nagpur to ensure law and order. The curfew had initially been imposed in 11 police station jurisdictions, including Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, and Tehsil, to curb further violence.

Commissioner Singal stated, “Considering people’s convenience and the current law and order situation, we have lifted the curfew in some areas and relaxed it in others.” He emphasized that the situation is being closely monitored to prevent any recurrence of unrest.

The relaxation in five areas allowed residents to step out briefly to purchase essential items. However, strict restrictions continue in other parts of the city, with police maintaining checkpoints and conducting patrols to ensure compliance.

Authorities plan to review the situation later on Thursday to decide on further relaxations. The ongoing investigation into the violence, with 18 special teams formed to nab culprits, is expected to yield more arrests as Nagpur strives to restore full normalcy.
