PM Modi’s Vibrant Turban Marks Republic Day 2025 with Cultural Flair
On the 76th Republic Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived at Kartavya Path in New Delhi dressed in a stunning ensemble that continued his tradition of embracing ‘desi’ looks. Modi sported a red and yellow striped turban with a long veil, paired elegantly with a brown bandhgala jacket, a multi-coloured pocket square, white pyjama, and churidar pants. This attire not only turned heads but also highlighted his deep connection to India’s cultural fabric.
Joining Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Modi welcomed President Droupadi Murmu and Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, who graced the event as the chief guest. Before the parade commenced, PM Modi honored the sacrifices of fallen soldiers with a two-minute silence at the National War Memorial, showcasing his respect for those who have safeguarded the nation.

The Republic Day parade, themed “Swarnim Bharat: Virasat aur Vikas” (Golden India: Heritage and Progress), saw President Murmu unfurling the national flag, officially starting the celebrations. Modi’s message to the nation underscored the importance of the day, celebrating 75 years of India as a republic and acknowledging the architects of the Constitution.
PM Modi’s choice of attire has become a topic of discussion each year, with his turbans often reflecting cultural nuances from different parts of India. From the vibrant yellow hue of last year’s turban with Rajasthani Bandhani print to the multi-coloured Rajasthani turban in 2023, his sartorial selections symbolize a blend of tradition and modernity. His choices on Independence Day have also been notable, from the bright red Jodhpuri “bandhej” turban in 2014 to the tie-and-dye turban in 2016, each reflecting a segment of India’s diverse cultural tapestry.
