Pune Bridge Collapse: 4 Dead, Over 30 Injured as Dilapidated Structure Falls Amid Heavy Rain

At least four people were killed and over 30 others injured after an old bridge collapsed in Talegaon, Pune, on Sunday afternoon amid heavy rainfall, sweeping several people into the fast-flowing Indrayani river. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed the fatalities and said rescue efforts are continuing, with many still feared missing.

The collapse occurred as dozens of people had gathered on the dilapidated bridge to witness the swelling river below. According to officials, the bridge—originally constructed for agricultural use three decades ago—had been closed to vehicular traffic but continued to draw tourists and local onlookers. Preliminary reports suggest strong currents caused by the rain led to the collapse.

Five to six individuals have been rescued from the river, while at least 32 people have been admitted to hospitals with injuries—six of them in critical condition. Fifteen ambulances were rushed to the site, and teams from the police, district administration, and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on the ground.

“I have spoken to the Divisional Commissioner, Tehsildar and the Police Commissioner. Some people are still trapped, and NDRF teams have reached the spot to assist,” CM Fadnavis said. He announced an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh for the families of those who lost their lives.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently in Cyprus, spoke with CM Fadnavis and was briefed on the rescue operations. “Deeply saddened by the tragic incident,” said Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who added that NDRF teams responded with “remarkable promptness” and saved many lives.

NCP MLA Sunil Shelke attributed the collapse to overloading by tourists and two-wheelers. “This bridge was not built for such traffic. It was originally meant for farmers. Despite repeated restrictions, people kept visiting the spot,” he said.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge called it an “avoidable tragedy” and stressed the need for accountability. “Even as we mourn this profound loss, it’s crucial to ask meaningful questions of those in power,” he wrote on X.
