Ranya Rao Alleges ‘Verbal Abuse’ by DRI Officials in Gold Smuggling Case
Kannada actor Ranya Rao, arrested for smuggling gold from Dubai, accused Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials of verbal abuse during a court hearing on Monday. Appearing before a Special Court for Economic Offences, she alleged mental harassment while in custody. The court remanded her to judicial custody until March 24 after her three-day DRI custody ended.
Ranya was detained at Kempegowda International Airport last week with gold worth crores. The DRI secured her custody on Friday to probe the smuggling case. Monday’s hearing saw her levelling serious allegations against the agency.
In court, Ranya said, “They didn’t hit me, but they verbally abused me badly,” alleging threats when she refused to answer questions. She claimed the ordeal caused her “severe mental distress” and broke down during the proceedings.
The investigating officer refuted her claims, stating, “She refuses to answer any questions during interrogation.” The officer added, “We have recorded the entire investigation,” denying any harassment. He alleged her lawyers coached her responses.

Ranya told Justice Vishwanath C Gowdar, “They pressured me to sign everything,” claiming she was taken to unknown locations. She questioned, “Why are they mapping my house?” The judge assured her the investigation was recorded on video.
The judge asked why Ranya didn’t raise the issue earlier, noting, “You were given 30 minutes daily with your lawyer.” He advised her to file a petition if needed. The Special Public Prosecutor said, “CCTV footage can be checked if required.”
The prosecutor dismissed harassment claims, stating, “Questioning an accused cannot be considered torture.” He argued that discomfort during interrogation is normal. The court urged Ranya to “control yourself” as she grew emotional.
The judge reprimanded Ranya’s lawyer for interrupting, saying, “She is answering our questions. Why are you cross-examining her?” The exchange highlighted tensions in the courtroom. The bail hearing was adjourned to Tuesday.
Ranya remains in judicial custody until March 24, with her bail plea pending. The court has asked the prosecution to file objections by Tuesday. Further revelations from the DRI’s probe into the smuggling network are awaited as the case unfolds.
