Tesla Begins In Hiring India, 13 New Jobs Announced After Elon Musk- PM Modi Meeting
Tesla Inc., the trailblazer in electric vehicles and renewable energy, has taken a significant step towards establishing a presence in India. After Elon Musk’s meeting with PM Narendra Modi during the latter’s US visit, Tesla announced it would start hiring for 13 roles across various departments in India. This move signals Tesla’s intent to tap into the burgeoning Indian market for electric vehicles (EVs).
Tesla is currently seeking candidates for positions ranging from Service Technicians to Store Managers, with openings listed on LinkedIn. These roles span customer service, sales, operations, and technical support, reflecting Tesla’s strategy to build a comprehensive team in India.
Following the announcement, sources from the Finance Ministry have revealed that Tesla plans to open three manufacturing plants in India – one in Gujarat, another in Andhra Pradesh, and a third location yet to be finalized. This expansion is part of a broader strategy that also involves setting up at least two showrooms, with potential sites in Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad. The groundwork for these initiatives was laid last year, but gained momentum post the Musk-Modi meeting.

Historically, Tesla’s engagement with India has been cautious, primarily due to high import duties on vehicles. However, recent policy changes by the Indian government, reducing customs duties on high-end cars from 110% to 70%, have made the market more appealing. India’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 aligns with Tesla’s mission, making India a strategic market for EV penetration.
In 2022, plans for Musk’s visit to India to discuss investment and manufacturing were postponed due to Tesla’s internal challenges in the US. Despite this, Tesla has been advocating for lower import taxes to incentivize a larger investment in India. The Indian government’s response has been proactive, offering reduced duties for EV makers committing to local manufacturing with substantial investments.
With these developments, Tesla is poised to not only bring its innovative electric vehicles to Indian consumers but also contribute to local employment and the country’s green energy goals. This hiring spree is just the beginning of what could be a transformative journey for Tesla in India, potentially reshaping the automotive landscape with sustainable solutions.
