“This is dictatorship” BJP Slams Kharge Over Rajya Sabha Clash With Speaker, Demands Apology
A fiery confrontation unfolded in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday as BJP leaders accused Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge of using inappropriate language against the Speaker, sparking demands for an apology. The clash erupted during Kharge’s speech when the Speaker intervened, leading to a sharp exchange. BJP chief JP Nadda called the remarks “unacceptable,” intensifying the row.
The tension began as Kharge addressed the House, only to be interrupted by the Speaker. Visibly frustrated, Kharge remarked, “This is dictatorship,” insisting he be allowed to finish his prepared speech. His comment drew immediate backlash from BJP lawmakers, who labeled it disrespectful to the Chair.
BJP chief JP Nadda led the criticism, stating, “It is very unfortunate that the Leader of the Opposition is using this kind of language for the Chair.” He urged the Speaker to condemn Kharge’s words and demanded a formal apology. Other BJP leaders echoed the sentiment, calling the remarks a breach of parliamentary decorum.

Responding to the uproar, Kharge clarified his stance, saying, “I apologize for my comments… My remarks were directed at the government’s policies, not the Speaker.” He added, “I apologize to you, but not to the government.” Despite this, the BJP insisted his apology was insufficient.
Nadda stood firm, reiterating, “The language he used and the aspersions he cast on the Chair are unacceptable. He should apologize.” The BJP maintained that Kharge’s clarification did not fully address the gravity of his initial statement. The Speaker has yet to formally respond to the demand.
The incident has heightened tensions between the ruling BJP and the opposition in the Rajya Sabha. Further discussions on the matter may unfold in upcoming sessions, with the Speaker’s ruling potentially shaping the outcome. Updates are expected as both sides navigate this parliamentary standoff.
