Uttarakhand BJP MLA’s Ban ‘Non-Hindus at Kedarnath’ Triggers Controversy
BJP MLA Asha Nautiyal’s demand to restrict non-Hindus from entering Kedarnath temple, citing threats to its sanctity, has sparked a political row in Uttarakhand. Congress leader Harish Rawat hit back, accusing the BJP of making sensational remarks ahead of the Char Dham Yatra.
Asha Nautiyal, the Kedarnath MLA, claimed that some non-Hindu individuals are harming the reputation of the revered Kedarnath Dham. She argued that such actions justify barring them from the temple premises. She made the remarks following a recent meeting on yatra management with local stakeholders.
The meeting, chaired by minister-in-charge Saurabh Bahuguna, involved local authorities and residents. Participants raised concerns about non-Hindus allegedly tarnishing the temple’s image, Nautiyal said. She suggested identifying and banning those involved in such activities after a thorough probe.
When asked about reports of meat, fish, and alcohol being served in the area, Nautiyal said, “This can only be found out following proper investigation.” She stressed that any activity maligning Kedarnath’s image must be addressed. The BJP leader linked such incidents to “non-Hindus from outside” defaming the shrine.

Former Uttarakhand CM Harish Rawat criticized Nautiyal’s statement, saying, “It is a habit of BJP leaders to make sensational remarks. Uttarakhand is a ‘devbhoomi’—how long will you attach everything with religion?” Rawat accused the BJP of lacking substantive issues to present to the public.
The controversy emerges ahead of the Char Dham Yatra, set to begin on April 30 with the opening of Gangotri and Yamunotri. Kedarnath Dham will open on May 2, followed by Badrinath Dham on May 4. The annual pilgrimage draws lakhs of devotees to Uttarakhand’s sacred sites.
The row could escalate as the yatra approaches, with the BJP and Congress likely to clash further on the issue. Authorities may launch an investigation into Nautiyal’s claims, while public and political reactions are expected to shape the debate. Updates on any official action or responses are awaited.
