Annamalai Flogs Himself; Vows to Overthrow DMK Government
Tamil Nadu BJP state president K. Annamalai made headlines with a dramatic act of self-flogging during a public event. He declared it an act of atonement against the administrative inefficiencies. He termed these inefficiencies as part of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government. The act took place in the presence of BJP supporters and mediapersons. It showcased his commitment to his pledge. He vowed to surrender to a “higher power” and fight for Tamil Nadu’s justice.
Dressed in a traditional green mundu and shirtless, Annamalai flogged himself with a white whip six times. Reports indicate he went as far as eight. His supporters intervened to stop him. Placards carried by BJP members displayed slogans such as “Don’t you have any shame Stalin?”, “Hang accused Gnanasekharan,” and “#ShameOnYouStalin.”
Speaking to the media after the act, Annamalai explained, “These practices are deeply rooted in Tamil culture. Flogging, punishing ourselves, and enduring rituals are ways to express resistance against injustice.”
Annamalai positioned the act not just as a personal or political statement but as a representation of Tamil Nadu’s rich cultural traditions. “This is about the common man’s suffering caused by the DMK government’s inefficiency,” he said, referencing recent controversies, including issues at Anna University.

He further justified his actions as part of his spiritual and cultural belief system, adding, “It is a process of surrendering to God and the higher power.”
Annamalai also addressed his decision to forego footwear, stating, “I believe in surrendering myself to a larger power. This decision comes after deep consideration and symbolizes leaving the outcome of our hard work in the hands of a higher authority.” He vowed not to wear slippers until the DMK government is overthrown and Tamil Nadu’s “lost glory” is restored.
With a clear objective, Annamalai declared that the BJP’s goal for 2026 is to remove the DMK from power. He reiterated his commitment to work relentlessly for the people of Tamil Nadu and ensure justice and prosperity for the state.
