Delhi L-G Sanctions ED to Prosecute Kejriwal? Political Controversy ahead of Elections
In a significant development, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has reportedly granted sanction to the Enforcement Directorate (ED). They can now prosecute Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. This is in connection with the excise policy case. This alleged nod comes just weeks before the assembly elections, intensifying the political climate in the national capital.
ED’s Allegations and Prosecution Request
The ED’s investigation reportedly uncovered significant corruption. This occurred in the framing and execution of Delhi’s excise policy. In response, the agency approached L-G Saxena earlier this month, seeking permission to prosecute Kejriwal. This request was mentioned in prosecution complaint no. 7, filed in the Rouse Avenue Court on May 17, 2023. The court acknowledged the complaint on July 9.
According to the ED and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), irregularities occurred during policy modifications. They allegedly extended undue benefits to certain license holders. The Delhi government introduced the policy on November 17, 2021, but withdrew it by September 2022 amid allegations of corruption.
AAP Leaders Deny Allegations, Demand Evidence
AAP leaders have vehemently denied the charges, dismissing the claims as “fake news” propagated by the ED. Party spokespersons Saurabh Bharadwaj, Priyanka Kakkar, and Manish Sisodia have demanded official proof of the alleged sanction. “If such an order exists, a copy should be made available to us,” they asserted.

Excise Policy Under Scrutiny
The excise policy aims to restructure the liquor trade in Delhi. It became a point of contention after allegations of favoritism and corruption surfaced. The CBI and ED investigations began after L-G Saxena’s recommendation. These investigations have further intensified the debate. Opposition parties accuse AAP of misuse of power.
Impact on Upcoming Elections
As the assembly elections approach, the controversy over the excise policy has intensified. This has created a volatile political environment. It is uncertain if the prosecution of Arvind Kejriwal will proceed. However, the allegations and ensuing uproar are likely to dominate public discourse in the weeks to come.
