Maharashtra Politics : Fadnavis, Ajit in Delhi as Shinde Stays Back

Maharashtra politics is getting a new turn as the power-sharing negotiations within Mahayuti alliance—comprising BJP, Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and NCP (Ajit Pawar faction)—are nearing a critical juncture as cabinet expansion looms. With the winter session of the state legislature set to begin on December 16, resolving disputes over ministerial berths is a priority.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar recently traveled to Delhi for consultations with BJP central leadership, including Amit Shah and J.P. Nadda. Notably, Deputy CM Eknath Shinde, reportedly dissatisfied with the proposed allocation, opted to remain in Thane.
Power-Sharing Formula
- The 43-member cabinet will allocate 22 berths to BJP, 11-12 to Shiv Sena, and 9-10 to NCP.
- BJP will retain critical portfolios, including Home and Revenue, while NCP will manage Finance.
- Shiv Sena is set to oversee Urban Development and possibly Excise and Public Works
Key Disputes
Eknath Shinde is reportedly unhappy with his portfolio assignments. He was eyeing significant departments such as Revenue, Housing, and Public Works but has only secured Urban Development so far. Additionally, BJP’s insistence on excluding leaders facing corruption allegations has intensified tensions
Upcoming Timeline
The final decision on ministerial allocations and the swearing-in ceremony is expected by December 14. The cabinet expansion will likely occur in phases, with an initial group of ministers taking oath before the winter session. Further reshuffles may follow depending on ongoing negotiations
As the Mahayuti alliance addresses these internal conflicts, the success of the coalition in maintaining unity will be pivotal for governance in Maharashtra & Maharashtra politics.
