PM Modi Slams Congress Over Waqf Act, Dares Party to Appoint Muslim President

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday accused the Congress of appeasement politics and challenged the party to name a Muslim as its president, citing their opposition to the amended Waqf Act.

Speaking at a rally in Hisar, Haryana, on the 135th birth anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar, PM Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress, questioning its track record on Muslim representation.

“If you have so much sympathy for Muslims, then why not make a Muslim the party president? Give 50 per cent of the seats to Muslims in the elections,” he said during his address.

The prime minister’s remarks were made in the backdrop of ongoing political debates over minority rights, reservations, and the implementation of the amended Waqf Act.

PM Modi criticised the Congress for resisting the amended Waqf Act, accusing the party of siding with “fundamentalist forces” and ignoring tribal and marginalised communities

“Congress has only pleased some fundamentalists. The rest of the society remained miserable, uneducated, and poor,” he said.

Under the amended law, Waqf Boards will no longer be able to claim land in tribal regions, a move the government says will protect the rights of tribal communities.

“The poor and Pasmanda Muslim families, women—especially widows—and children will now have their rights safeguarded. This is what real social justice looks like,” Modi asserted.

The Prime Minister also accused the Congress of misusing the Constitution for political gain and ignoring key constitutional principles, such as the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

“Whenever they felt that power was slipping from their hands, they trampled upon the Constitution, just as they did during the Emergency,” he said.

Modi claimed the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand was a step toward what he described as a “secular civil code,” which Congress has opposed.

Modi further alleged that the Congress disrespected Dr Ambedkar during his lifetime. “We must never forget what the Congress did to Babasaheb Ambedkar. While he was alive, the party insulted him repeatedly and made him lose elections twice,” he said.

He also reiterated that his government draws inspiration from Ambedkar’s vision and vowed to continue empowering the marginalised.

The remarks come at a time when the BJP is intensifying its election campaign across several states. The Congress has criticised the Waqf Act amendment as discriminatory and accused the government of targeting minority institutions.

The BJP, meanwhile, has projected the move as part of its broader agenda of social justice and minority empowerment.
