BCCI Grills PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi In Tense Meeting Over Asia Cup Trophy Fiasco, To Complain To ICC
The simmering controversy over the Asia Cup trophy erupted into a full-blown confrontation on Tuesday as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) grilled Asian Cricket Council (ACC) chief and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Mohsin Naqvi during a heated meeting. The BCCI raised strong objections to the fiasco that unfolded after the final, where the victorious Indian team refused to accept the trophy from Naqvi, who then took it into his personal custody.
The tense exchange has now prompted the BCCI to file an official complaint with the International Cricket Council (ICC).During the ACC meeting, BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla confronted Naqvi, questioning his actions and reminding him that the trophy was the property of the ACC, not his personal possession to be taken to a hotel room. This led to a heated argument, with Naqvi reportedly claiming he was “made to look like a cartoon” and defending his actions by stating the Indian team had not provided a written refusal to accept the trophy from him. When pressed further, Naqvi deflected, stating the issue would be discussed on a different platform.
The tension escalated when Naqvi initially refused to congratulate India for their tournament win, only doing so after being prodded by BCCI representative Ashish Shelar. Despite the BCCI making it clear that the trophy belonged to them and even offering to collect it from the ACC office, Naqvi refused to budge, insisting the matter required further discussion. This stance left the Indian cricket board fuming, as they maintained there was nothing to discuss.
The controversy began during the post-match presentation when Team India declined to receive the trophy from the PCB chief. Videos later emerged showing an ACC official running away with the trophy, which BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed was taken to Naqvi’s hotel room. India had reportedly been willing to accept the trophy from Emirates Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni, but the ACC rejected this request. The incident led to Indian players celebrating their victory with pointed digs at Naqvi’s actions.
