D Gukesh Creates History as Youngest Chess World Champion
Indian chess prodigy D Gukesh, aged 18, has made history by becoming the youngest-ever World Chess Champion, defeating reigning champion Ding Liren in the decisive 14th game of the 2024 FIDE World Chess Championship held in Singapore. Gukesh clinched the title after a tense endgame where Ding made a critical mistake, leading to his resignation.
D Gukesh Record-Breaking Victory
The International Chess Federation (FIDE) celebrated Gukesh’s achievement, declaring him the youngest champion in the sport’s history. Gukesh surpassed the previous record held by Garry Kasparov, who won the title at 22 in 1985. This victory also makes D Gukesh the second Indian World Chess Champion, following in the footsteps of the legendary Viswanathan Anand, a five-time champion.
In the final moments, Gukesh, overcome with emotion, buried his face in his hands as cheers erupted from the viewing rooms packed with Indian fans and local supporters in Singapore. Ding Liren, 32, slumped over the table after realizing his decisive blunder in the endgame, which sealed Gukesh’s win.
Exceptional Prize Money
The 2024 World Chess Championship carried a staggering $2.5 million prize pool. Each classical game win was worth $200,000 (approx ₹1.69 crore). Gukesh, with three wins, earned $600,000 (₹5.07 crore). Combined with the split prize pool, his total earnings from the championship stand at an impressive $1.35 million (₹11.45 crore). Ding Liren, with two victories, secured $1.15 million (₹9.75 crore).
A Star on the Rise
Gukesh’s remarkable journey included being the youngest-ever challenger for the world title and scoring key wins in a tightly contested series that ended with a 7.5–6.5 victory. His historic achievement signals the rise of a new era in chess, firmly placing him as a global icon of the sport.
