‘Extremely Sorry’: BCCI Responds After Australian Cricketers Molested In Indore
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has issued a strong statement expressing deep regret over the “very unfortunate” incident in which two Australian women cricketers were molested in Indore. Cricket Australia confirmed that two members of its team, currently in India for the Women’s World Cup, were “approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist” on Thursday.The incident occurred as the players were walking from their hotel to a cafe.
Team security immediately reported the matter to the police, who registered an FIR and swiftly arrested the accused. In a statement, Cricket Australia said, “CA can confirm two members of the Australian Women’s team were approached and touched inappropriately by a motorcyclist while walking to a cafe in Indore. The matter was reported by team security to police, who are handling the matter.”BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia condemned the incident, calling it something that “brings disrepute.” He conveyed a formal apology on behalf of the board.
“This is a very unfortunate event that has taken place. Nobody expected this kind of thing to happen because India is such a hospitable country… we are extremely sorry for this incident,” Saikia told news agency IANS. He praised the state police for their prompt action in nabbing the culprit and assured that security for all visiting teams would be revamped to prevent any future occurrences.
The Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) also expressed its shock and dismay. MPCA President Mahanaaryaman Scindia posted on social media that he was “deeply distressed, shocked, and saddened.” He stated, “No woman should have to face such inappropriate behaviour… One individual’s inappropriate conduct has dealt a blow to this esteemed image [of Indore], leaving us all deeply saddened.” He reaffirmed the MPCA’s full solidarity with the Australian team and its commitment to assisting the investigation.
