‘Outright Pathetic’: Sports Minister Slams Congress, TMC Over Rohit Sharma Remarks
New Delhi, March 03, 2025 – Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya unleashed a scathing attack on Congress and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leaders on Monday for their controversial remarks about Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma. The outburst came after Congress spokesperson Dr. Shama Mohamed called Sharma “fat for a sportsman” and “the most unimpressive captain India has ever had” in a now-deleted X post. Mandaviya labeled the comments “deeply shameful” and “outright pathetic,” accusing the parties of undermining athletes who represent India globally.
Mohamed’s remarks, posted after India’s 44-run win over New Zealand in the Champions Trophy on March 2, sparked outrage just before the team’s semi-final clash against Australia on March 4. TMC MP Sougata Roy doubled down, claiming Sharma “shouldn’t be in the team” due to his “poor performance,” despite India’s unbeaten run in the tournament. Sharma scored 15 runs in the New Zealand match, contributing to the victory that secured India’s semi-final spot.

Mandaviya fired back on X, saying, “Congress and TMC should leave sportspersons alone. Body-shaming and questioning an athlete’s place in the team are shameful.” The BJP echoed this, with spokesperson Amit Malviya alleging a “premeditated” attempt to dent team morale. “A party that lost 90 elections under Rahul Gandhi is now targeting a World Cup-winning captain,” Malviya posted, referencing Sharma’s 2024 T20 World Cup triumph.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also weighed in. Secretary Devajit Saikia called the remarks “unfortunate” and “demoralizing,” urging restraint during India’s ICC campaign. Facing backlash, Congress distanced itself from Mohamed’s statement. Spokesperson Pawan Khera clarified on X, “Her remarks don’t reflect our position. We honor sporting icons and don’t endorse undermining their legacy.” Mohamed was instructed to delete her post and exercise caution.
Sharma, with a 72% win rate across formats, remains a fan favorite. As India gears up for the semi-final, the controversy has rallied support for the captain, with critics slamming the political jab as ill-timed and baseless.
