Rohit Sharma Set for Retirement ? Talks with Ajit Agarkar Post Champions Trophy Final

India’s cricket captain Rohit Sharma is reportedly gearing up for a crucial discussion with BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar about his ODI future following the Champions Trophy 2025 final against New Zealand on Sunday. After leading India to T20 World Cup victory in 2024 and retiring from T20Is alongside Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja, the focus now shifts to his plans in the 50-over format. The final in Dubai could mark a turning point for the 37-year-old batting legend.

Rohit’s retirement from T20Is last year came after a triumphant T20 World Cup campaign, ending an 11-year ICC trophy drought for India. Now, with the Champions Trophy final looming, a PTI report suggests the Mumbai Indians star may decide his ODI fate post-match. The BCCI and Agarkar are expected to weigh in after Sunday’s clash.

Ahead of the final, vice-captain Shubman Gill was asked about Rohit’s future during a press conference. “There’s no discussion in the dressing room or with me. Even Rohit bhai is focused on the final, like all of us,” Gill said, dismissing retirement talks for now. The team’s priority remains the trophy.

Rohit Sharma’s career is studded with records: most ODI double centuries (3), most World Cup centuries (7), and the highest individual ODI score (264). He’s the only player with five T20I tons and the fastest T20I century (35 balls). A big knock against New Zealand could cap his illustrious journey.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli, who also quit T20Is in 2024, is 55 runs away from overtaking Ricky Ponting as the second-highest ODI run-scorer. After breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries in 2023, Kohli’s form will be under the spotlight in Dubai. No updates on his ODI future have surfaced yet.

The outcome of Sunday’s final could influence Rohit’s decision. A win might see him bow out on a high, while Agarkar’s input will shape India’s ODI roadmap. Fans await clarity on both Rohit and Kohli as the team eyes its first Champions Trophy title since 2013. Updates are expected post-match.
