Shubman Gill To Replace Rohit Sharma As India’s New ODI Captain
In a significant leadership change for Indian cricket, World No. 1 ODI batter Shubman Gill is set to be appointed as the new captain of the ODI team, taking over the reins from Rohit Sharma. According to reports from the Indian Express and ESPN Cricinfo, Gill’s captaincy will commence with the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia.
While Gill will lead the side, senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will reportedly remain part of the squad. The decision is seen as a strategic move by the BCCI selectors with an eye on the future, specifically the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup. The selectors reportedly communicated their long-term vision to Gill, earmarking him to lead the team in the next World Cup, which will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. Gill is also said to have attended the selection meeting where the decision was finalized.
This promotion marks a natural progression for Gill, who is already the captain of the Test team and served as vice-captain during India’s successful Asia Cup 2025 campaign last month. Although he has previously led India in five T20Is, this will be his first stint as the full-time captain of the 50-over side.In other team news, star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant will miss the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia as he continues his recovery from a foot injury.
A report in the Times of India confirmed that the 28-year-old has not yet fully recuperated from the injury he sustained during the Test series against England in July. According to a BCCI source, his rehabilitation is progressing slowly, and he is now expected to make his comeback during the home series against South Africa next month.
