Will Rohit Sharma Play in Sydney? Gautam Gambhir Keeps Fans Guessing
In the lead-up to the Sydney Test against Australia in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, head coach Gautam Gambhir has kept cricket enthusiasts on edge regarding Rohit Sharma’s inclusion. Despite being seen actively warming up, shadow-practising drives, and engaging with teammates, Rohit’s place in the playing XI remains uncertain.
During a pre-match press conference, Gautam Gambhir was repeatedly asked about Rohit Sharma’s availability. However, he remained tight-lipped. He stated, “We are going to have a look at the wicket. We will announce the playing XI tomorrow.” He added that the decision would depend on pitch conditions and other factors assessed closer to the match.
Gambhir also addressed concerns about Rohit not attending the customary captain’s pre-match press conference, asserting, “Everything is fine with Rohit. I don’t think it’s a tradition. The head coach is here, and that should suffice.”
Rohit Sharma’s recent form in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy has been a point of contention. The Indian captain has managed just 31 runs across three Tests, leading to growing criticism about his place in the side. Fans and former cricketers, including Aakash Chopra, have suggested that dropping Rohit for the Sydney Test might not be unwarranted.
India’s selection approach throughout the series has been unconventional. The team made surprising changes, including rotating spinners Washington Sundar, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja in different matches. Fast bowler Harshit Rana debuted in Perth but was benched after the Adelaide Test.
The experiments continued in Melbourne, where three all-rounders—Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, and Washington Sundar—were included, and Shubman Gill was dropped. Rohit, under pressure as a captain and batsman, moved to the opening slot, while KL Rahul shifted to No. 3.
When repeatedly questioned about Rohit’s status, Gambhir remained steadfast, reiterating, “The answer is the same.” He also confirmed that fast bowler Akash Deep would miss the match due to an injury, leaving the team to finalize its combination.
As fans await the playing XI announcement, all eyes are on Rohit Sharma. Everyone wonders if he will play a pivotal role in the Sydney Test. With India trailing in the series and under pressure to perform, the final decision could significantly impact the team’s chances.
