1 Dead, 5 Injured in Toronto Mass Shooting; Manhunt Underway for Gunman
A mass shooting rocked Toronto’s Lawrence Heights neighbourhood on Tuesday night, leaving one person dead and five others injured, authorities confirmed. The gunman remains at large as a full-scale investigation is underway.
Toronto Police responded to reports of multiple gunshots near Flemington and Zachary Roads, close to Ranee Avenue and Allen Road, shortly after 8:30 pm local time. Paramedics arrived at the scene within minutes.
“One male confirmed deceased. Five people with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds transported to hospital,” Toronto Police said in a post on X.
The identity of the deceased has not been released. Victims were rushed to nearby hospitals and are said to be in stable condition.
A police command post has been set up in the area as investigators scour the scene for evidence and search for suspects. As of Wednesday morning, no arrests have been made and police have not disclosed a motive or suspect description.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow expressed her concern on social media. “I am disturbed by news of the shootings in the Lawrence Heights area this evening,” she posted on X. Chow added that her office was in contact with Toronto Police and Deputy Mayor Mike Colle.
“I want to thank the first responders — Toronto Police, Fire and Paramedic Services — for your work on a very busy and challenging scene,” she said.
The incident has heightened safety concerns in the Lawrence Heights area, which has seen sporadic gun violence over the years. According to Toronto Police statistics, firearm-related violent crime rose by nearly 10% in 2024 compared to the previous year.
Social media was flooded with posts from alarmed residents, many of whom reported hearing multiple gunshots. Authorities have asked the public to avoid the area and urged anyone with information or video footage to come forward.
As the manhunt continues, Toronto Police are expected to hold a press briefing to share updates on the case.
