2 Israeli Embassy Staffers Shot Dead in Washington; Attacker Allegedly Shouted ‘Free Palestine’

Two Israeli embassy staff members were shot dead at close range during a Jewish event near the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC on Wednesday evening, triggering widespread shock and diplomatic concern.

The victims — one man and one woman — were gunned down near 3rd and F Streets NW, close to several high-security locations including an FBI field office and the US Attorney’s Office. The assailant was quickly apprehended at the scene, police confirmed.

Washington Police Chief Pamela Smith stated that the attacker was seen pacing outside the museum before the incident. Upon arrest, the suspect reportedly chanted, “Free Palestine, Free Palestine,” suggesting a possible political motive. However, officials have yet to confirm this as the definitive cause.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed the attack in a post on X (formerly Twitter), while Attorney General Pam Bondi, who was at the scene with US Attorney Jeanine Pirro, acknowledged the gravity of the situation.

Israeli officials reacted strongly. Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon condemned the killings, calling it a “heinous act of anti-Semitic terrorism.”
“We are confident that the US authorities will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act,” Danon posted. “Israel will continue to act resolutely to protect its citizens and representatives — everywhere in the world.”

FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed that the bureau was working closely with the Metropolitan Police Department. “Please pray for the victims and their families,” he said in a statement on X.

Tal Naim Cohen, spokesperson for the Israeli embassy in Washington, confirmed the victims were attending the Jewish event in an official capacity when they were targeted.
“They were shot at close range,” Cohen stated, without disclosing identities, pending family notification.

Police have yet to announce formal charges, but a press conference is expected later Wednesday evening.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions globally over the Israel-Palestine conflict. The incident has raised fresh concerns over the safety of diplomatic staff and Jewish communities worldwide, particularly in politically charged environments.
