5 Dead in Manhattan Skyscraper Shooting, Including NYPD Officer; Gunman Neutralised

A deadly mass shooting in a prominent Midtown Manhattan skyscraper on Monday evening left four people, including an off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) officer, dead before the gunman took his own life. The incident, which began around 6:30 p.m. local time, triggered a massive police response and sent shockwaves through the city.

The gunman, identified as 27-year-old Shane Tamura of Las Vegas, Nevada, entered the high-rise at 345 Park Avenue armed with an AR-15-style rifle and wearing body armor. He first shot and killed an off-duty officer working as a security guard near the entrance before storming into the building and continuing his rampage. Three other civilians were killed before authorities found Tamura dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the 33rd floor. A fifth person was shot and remains in critical but stable condition.

The slain officer was identified as Didarul Islam, a three-year veteran of the force and a former refugee from Bangladesh.

New York Mayor Eric Adams confirmed there were “multiple injuries” and expressed his “deepest sympathies” to the family of the officer killed. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated on X that the scene had been “contained and the lone shooter has been neutralised”. The motive for the attack is not yet known and remains under investigation.

The 44-story skyscraper is a major corporate hub, housing the global headquarters of the NFL and financial giant Blackstone, as well as offices for KPMG, Deutsche Bank, and Colgate-Palmolive. The area around Park Avenue and East 51st Street was placed on lockdown as police, including SWAT teams, swarmed the scene.

Witnesses inside the building described scenes of terror. Jessica Chen, who was on the second floor, told reporters she heard multiple shots and ran with colleagues into a conference room, barricading the door. “A lot of us were young, a lot of us went through training in elementary school of what to do in an active shooter situation. We were all, unfortunately, prepared,” she said. She added that she texted her parents, “I love them”
