5 US Soldiers Shot at Georgia Military Base, Gunman Arrested

At least five United States soldiers were injured after a gunman opened fire inside Fort Stewart, a major military base in Georgia, on Wednesday morning. The suspected shooter was swiftly taken into custody, and officials have confirmed there is no longer an active threat to the community.

The incident unfolded shortly before 11 a.m. local time when law enforcement responded to reports of a shooting in the 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team area of the base. The installation, which is the largest US military base east of the Mississippi River, was immediately placed on lockdown at 11:04 a.m.

Within about half an hour, at 11:35 a.m., the suspected gunman was arrested. The injured soldiers were transported to the Winn Army Community Hospital for treatment; the severity of their injuries has not yet been disclosed.

While the lockdown for the main part of the base was lifted around noon, the specific complex where the shooting occurred remained secured. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp wrote on X that he and his family were “saddened by today’s tragedy” and were keeping the victims in their prayers.

The White House confirmed that President Donald Trump has been briefed on the situation and is monitoring developments. Fort Stewart is located approximately 64 km southwest of Savannah and is home to the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division
