‘Canada Will Never Be Part of America’ Mark Carney in First Address as Liberal Leader
Mark Carney, newly elected leader of Canada’s Liberal Party, declared in his victory speech that Canada will never become part of the United States under his watch. The 59-year-old, set to replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister, won 86% of the votes in a leadership race on Sunday. His remarks targeted U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies and comments about Canada becoming the 51st state.
Addressing supporters, Carney emphasised Canada’s sovereignty in the face of Trump’s repeated suggestions. “America is not Canada. Canada will never ever be part of America in any way, shape or form,” he stated. He won the leadership contest against former Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland.
Carney highlighted U.S. interest in Canada’s resources, water, and land. “If they succeeded, they would destroy our way of life,” he told the crowd. He positioned his leadership as a defence against external pressures on Canada’s identity and economy.
On Trump’s 25% tariffs on Canadian goods—excluding automobiles and energy—Carney vowed to maintain retaliatory measures. “Canada’s stance will remain until the U.S. commits to free and fair trade,” he said. Outgoing PM Justin Trudeau had already adopted a similar approach.

Describing the U.S. as a nation “we can no longer trust,” Carney urged Canadians to unite. “These are dark days, but we must look after ourselves and each other,” he said. He stressed the need to support those hit hardest by American tariffs.
Carney also took aim at the Conservative Party, suggesting readiness for political battles. “Canadians don’t seek fights, but we’re prepared when someone drops the gloves,” he remarked. The comment underscored rising domestic and international stakes ahead of elections.
The former Bank of Canada and Bank of England governor secured a landslide win with 86% of Liberal Party votes. His economic expertise is seen as key to navigating Canada’s challenges. He will assume the prime minister’s office after a swearing-in ceremony in the coming days.
Carney’s leadership begins amid a trade war with the U.S., with a federal election due by October 2025. Speculation of a snap election grows as he aims to capitalise on anti-Trump sentiment. Further updates on his policy plans and U.S. relations are expected soon.
