Donald Trump US Expansion Agenda: To Make Canada 51st State
In a series of bold statements ahead of his return to the White House on January 20, President-elect Donald Trump has unveiled an ambitious expansionist agenda that includes making Canada the 51st American state, acquiring Greenland, and retaking control of the Panama Canal. Trump also plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America,” signaling a sweeping vision for reshaping the geopolitical landscape.
Trump has floated the idea of absorbing Canada into the United States, claiming it would improve national security and eliminate the “artificially drawn” border between the two countries. At a press conference in Florida, he emphasized using “economic force” rather than military action to achieve this vision.
“You take a look at what that looks like. It would be much better for national security,” Trump said. However, the suggestion has drawn sharp criticism from Canadian leaders. Former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who recently resigned, dismissed the idea, stating that “there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell” that Canada would join the U.S.
Trump also reiterated his interest in acquiring Greenland from Denmark, labeling it “vital to U.S. national security.” While Denmark has consistently rebuffed such proposals, Trump hinted at potential economic or military pressure to achieve his aims.
Additionally, Trump discussed retaking control of the Panama Canal. The canal was built by the United States but handed over to Panama in 1999 under the Carter administration. He referred to the canal as critical to U.S. military and economic security. Panama’s Foreign Minister, however, firmly rejected the idea, stating that the canal will remain under Panamanian control.
Trump announced his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America,” claiming the new name has a “beautiful ring to it” and better reflects the region’s importance to the U.S. economy and culture. The Gulf, a vital hub for petroleum and trade, has held its current name since the 1500s.

Trump continued his tough stance on NATO. He called for member nations to increase their defense spending to 5% of GDP. This is an increase from the current 2% target. He also issued a stern warning to Hamas. He threatened severe repercussions if hostages taken during its 2023 attack on Israel are not released before his inauguration. “All hell will break out in the Middle East,” Trump said.
Trump’s expansionist rhetoric marks a significant shift in U.S. foreign policy, sparking debates about the feasibility and implications of such bold moves. While his proposals have met resistance internationally, they underscore his intent to redefine America’s global role.
