Elon Musk Deletes X Post Claiming Donald Trump is in Epstein Files
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has deleted a post from his social media platform X in which he made the explosive claim that US President Donald Trump was named in the sealed files of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The stunning reversal, which occurred sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, suggests a potential de-escalation in the recent public feud between the two influential figures.
On Thursday, Musk had dropped a bombshell on his platform, stating, “Time to drop the really big bomb. Donald Trump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public. Have a nice day, DJT!” He followed this with another now-deleted post that read, “Mark this post for the future. The truth will come out.”
The accusation triggered a swift and sharp response from President Trump, who on Friday said he was “particularly not interested” in speaking to Musk, claiming the billionaire had “lost his mind.”
The deletion of the posts is the latest twist in a rapidly souring relationship. Last month, Musk quit his role in the President’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a special task force he had joined to advise on cutting government waste. Since then, he has been at loggerheads with Trump, publicly criticizing a major spending bill and recent sweeping tax cuts proposed by the administration. Musk had been a significant financial backer of Trump’s presidential campaign following twin assassination attempts on the Republican leader last year.
Musk’s now-retracted claim reignited intense speculation and conspiracy theories surrounding the Epstein files – a trove of court documents and records related to the financier’s notorious sex trafficking ring. While some documents have been unsealed over the years, many believe sensitive information implicating powerful individuals remains hidden under court seal.
In February, US Attorney General Pam Bondi had announced the release of some documents from the Justice Department. However, much of the information was not new and had been previously available through lawsuits and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests, leaving many unsatisfied.
As the controversy around his posts swirled, a 2014 photo of Elon Musk with convicted sex trafficker Ghislaine Maxwell, Epstein’s longtime associate, resurfaced online. Musk has previously dismissed the photo, taken at a Hollywood party, as an instance of him being photobombed and has vehemently denied any personal or professional relationship with Epstein. In 2018, Epstein had claimed to a New York Times reporter that he had advised Musk, a claim Musk flatly rejected.
It remains unclear what prompted Musk to delete his posts about Trump. Neither party has commented publicly on the removal of the inflammatory claims, leaving observers to wonder if it marks a quiet truce or merely a tactical retreat in their ongoing public dispute.
