G7 leaders affirm Israel’s self-defence, reject Iranian nukes in draft summit declaration

The Group of Seven (G7) leaders gathered in Kananaskis, Canada, have drafted a joint statement affirming Israel’s right to self-defence while underscoring that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons. The declaration also urges both nations to de-escalate tensions and emphasises protection of global energy markets, according to sources familiar with the document.

The statement, set to be unveiled during the June 16–17 summit, aligns with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s call for the G7 to act in unity. He outlined four core points: Israel’s self-defence, preventing Iran’s nuclear capability, halting escalation, and fostering diplomatic efforts.

Despite consensus, U.S. President Donald Trump has yet to officially sign the draft. The White House has not commented on hold-ups.

The summit’s sharp focus on Israel-Iran reflects mounting concern over recent exchanges. Early Monday saw Iranian missiles strike major Israeli cities, prompting Israeli airstrikes that targeted Iran’s Defence Ministry in Tehran.

Global energy markets are on edge, with oil prices surging amid conflict fears. The G7’s draft stresses readiness to safeguard market stability.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in attendance, is expected to support calls for restraint and diplomacy amid the crisis. UK PM Keir Starmer has already issued a stern plea for de-escalation, warning of regional instability.

The G7 statement also warns against nuclear proliferation by Iran and notes that Tehran’s nuclear programme remains a danger to regional peace.

With global markets and geopolitical stability hanging in the balance, the summit’s push for a firm stand on self-defence, non-proliferation, and diplomacy marks a critical moment in international efforts to contain the Israel-Iran crisis.
