Indian Student From Delhi Dies in Canada, Cause of Death Unknown

Tanya Tyagi, a young Indian student from Delhi enrolled at the University of Calgary, has died under unexplained circumstances, the Indian Consulate in Vancouver confirmed on Thursday. Her sudden demise has left her family and the Indian student community in shock, while official investigations are ongoing.

The death of Tanya Tyagi was reported on June 17, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta. The Consulate General of India in Vancouver posted on X (formerly Twitter), expressing condolences and assuring full assistance to her family. “We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms. Tanya Tyagi… The Consulate is in touch with the authorities and will provide all required assistance to the bereaved family,” the post read.

Tyagi, who hailed from Northeast Delhi, had traveled to Canada to pursue higher education. The specific cause of her death has not yet been confirmed by Canadian authorities. However, an unverified post on X by a user claiming to be a relative suggested that she died of a heart attack.

The post, which also tagged the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), appealed for government help in repatriating her body to India. “She died on June 17 due to a heart attack…The student’s family has appealed to PM Modi for help,” the post stated.

So far, no official confirmation has been provided by Canadian law enforcement or the university regarding the cause of death.

This incident comes amid growing concerns about the well-being of Indian students abroad. In a recent unrelated case from March 2025, another Indian student, Sudiksha Konanki, went missing while vacationing in the Dominican Republic. Despite international efforts, including from the FBI and Dominican police, she remains untraceable.

Tyagi’s death adds to the list of distressing cases involving Indian students overseas, raising fresh calls for improved student support systems and faster emergency response mechanisms for expatriate Indians.

The Indian government has assured that all diplomatic channels are being activated to support Tanya’s family during this difficult time.
