Man Drives SUV Into Crowd In Canada Vancouver Street Festival, Multiple Fatalities Reported

A man drove an SUV into a street festival crowd in Vancouver on Saturday night, killing several and injuring many others, police confirmed. The driver is in custody.

Several people were killed and many others injured after an SUV drove into attendees of the ‘Lapu Lapu ’25 Block Party’ at Fraser Street and East 41st Avenue around 8 pm (local time) on Saturday, Vancouver Police Department (VPD) said. The incident has sparked shock and grief across the community, with emergency services rushing to aid the victims.

“The driver is in custody. We will provide more information as the investigation unfolds,” VPD stated on X (formerly Twitter).

Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with police cars, ambulances, and fire trucks flooding the area. Videos circulating on social media showed first responders and civilians attending to bloodied victims lying on the street.

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim expressed shock and sadness over the attack.
“We will work to provide more information as soon as we can, but at this time Vancouver police have confirmed that there are a number of fatalities and multiple injuries,” Sim said in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with all those affected and with Vancouver’s Filipino community during this incredibly difficult time,” he added.

New Democratic Party (NDP) MP Don Davies condemned the attack, calling it a “horrendous” act.
“I am praying for all the victims and their families,” he posted on X.

The crowd had gathered for the annual Lapu-Lapu Day celebrations, honoring the Philippines’ first national hero who famously defeated Spanish explorer Ferdinand Magellan in the Battle of Mactan in 1521.

The black SUV suspected in the attack was found at the scene with a crushed front end and airbags deployed. Authorities have not yet confirmed the driver’s identity or possible motives.

Street festivals and public gatherings in North America have faced growing safety concerns in recent years, with incidents involving vehicle attacks prompting tighter security measures. This attack has reignited debates around event security in open spaces.
