Missing Indian Student Vanshika Found Dead at Ottawa Beach, Probe Underway

Indian student Vanshika, missing for three days in Ottawa, Canada, was found dead near her college beach. Authorities have launched an investigation into her death.

A 21-year-old Indian student missing in Ottawa since April 25 has been found dead on a beach near her college, the Indian Embassy in Canada confirmed on Tuesday. Vanshika, daughter of AAP leader Davinder Saini from Dera Bassi, Punjab, had gone missing while visiting a rental property.

The Indian Embassy said the matter is under investigation by local police, who are yet to determine the cause of death. Vanshika’s mobile phone remains unrecovered, officials added.

According to a Facebook post issued by her friends, Vanshika left her residence at 7 Majestic Drive around 8–9 PM on April 25 to view a rental room. Her phone was switched off by 11:40 PM the same night, and she subsequently missed an important exam the following day, an act described as “highly unusual” by those close to her.

“She was always in touch with us. Not hearing from her even once was alarming,” said a family friend involved in the search.

The Hindu community in Ottawa had earlier launched a massive public appeal seeking help to locate her.

In a statement, the Indian Embassy in Canada said, “We are deeply saddened to be informed of the death of Ms. Vanshika, a student from India in Ottawa. The matter has been taken up with concerned authorities, and the cause is under investigation.”

Authorities have yet to release further details regarding any foul play or suspects involved.

Vanshika’s death is the third tragedy involving Indian students in Canada this month. Last week, 21-year-old Harsimrat Randhawa was killed by a stray bullet while waiting at a bus stop during a crossfire incident in Toronto.

Earlier in April, another Indian national was fatally stabbed in Rockland, a town near Ottawa. In that case, a suspect has been arrested, though investigations remain ongoing.

These incidents have sparked growing concern among the Indian diaspora about the safety of students abroad.

Indian authorities have been in touch with Canadian officials, urging thorough investigations and better protection for international students. Further updates from Ottawa Police are awaited as Vanshika’s family prepares for the repatriation of her body to India.

The Indian community and student organizations have planned a candlelight vigil in Ottawa later this week to honor Vanshika’s memory.
