A devastating incident marred New Year celebrations in New Orleans early Wednesday when a vehicle rammed into a crowd at Canal and Bourbon Street, killing 10 people and injuring 30 others. According to NOLA Ready, the city’s emergency preparedness agency, the tragedy unfolded in one of the busiest parts of the city, leaving witnesses and law enforcement in shock.

The incident occurred during the early hours as crowds gathered to celebrate New Year’s festivities. Witnesses reported seeing either an SUV or pickup truck speeding into the crowd. The vehicle struck party-goers before the driver exited and reportedly opened fire.

Local media suggested the man may have been wearing body armor and used an assault rifle during the attack. Police at the scene returned fire, neutralizing the immediate threat. The area, known for its vibrant nightlife and live jazz music, was packed with revelers, amplifying the impact of the tragedy.

Jim Mowrer, a U.S. Army veteran, was present on Bourbon Street with his wife when the horrifying event unfolded. He described the chaos in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “SUV came down speeding and running people over. Mass casualty event. Tried to provide first aid, but most were dead.”

The injured were swiftly transported to five hospitals across New Orleans for treatment. Law enforcement and medical personnel acted promptly to manage the chaotic scene and provide aid to the wounded.

The attack cast a shadow over New Orleans’ New Year celebrations, which had drawn thousands of people. The incident occurred just hours before the AllState Bowl at Caesars Superdome, a major college football event.
