A sharp war of words has erupted between India and Pakistan, with Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif threatening that India would be “buried under the wreckage of its warplanes.” This fiery response came just days after a series of stark warnings from India’s top military and political leadership, including Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi’s caution that Pakistan could be “erased from the world map” if it continues to support terrorism.

Clearly rattled by the strong statements from New Delhi, Asif on Sunday dismissed them as a “failed attempt” by India to restore its “tarnished reputation” following the military clashes during ‘Operation Sindoor’ in May. He alluded to unverified Pakistani claims of downing six Indian fighter jets, stating, “After such a decisive defeat with a score of 0-6, if they try again, the score, God willing, will be far better than before.

“Asif’s outburst was triggered by a recent barrage of assertive comments from India’s security establishment. On October 4, Army Chief Gen Dwivedi had warned Pakistan to stop its state-sponsorship of terror and stated that the restraint shown by India during ‘Operation Sindoor’ would not be repeated in a future conflict.

This was echoed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who declared that India can cross any border to protect its people and warned of a “decisive response” to any misadventure in the Sir Creek sector. Adding to the pressure, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh revealed on Friday that Indian strikes during ‘Operation Sindoor’ had destroyed or damaged at least a dozen Pakistani military aircraft, including F-16s, calling Islamabad’s counter-claims “fanciful stories.

“Tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours have been at a nadir since the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives. India responded with ‘Operation Sindoor’ in May, targeting terror infrastructure inside Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir, which led to intense clashes. India has since paused the Indus Waters Treaty and maintained that the only future talks with Islamabad will be about the return of PoK.
