PM Modi Speaks to Netanyahu, Urges Restoration of Peace After Israeli Strikes on Iran
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a telephonic conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday evening, after Israel launched preemptive airstrikes on Iran’s nuclear and military installations. Modi emphasised the urgent need for early restoration of peace and stability in the region, reflecting India’s deep concerns over potential escalation.Â
In the call, Netanyahu briefed Modi on the objectives and progress of Operation Rising Lion, which targeted Iran’s Natanz enrichment facility, missile installations, and key military leadership. Israel confirmed the elimination of senior Iranian commanders Hossein Salami and Mohammad Bagheri, declaring the strikes necessary to neutralise Iran’s nuclear threat.Â
Modi reiterated India’s long-standing position advocating diplomacy and restraint. “I shared India’s concerns and emphasised the need for early restoration of peace and stability in the region,” he stated on X. India’s External Affairs Ministry has also expressed deep concern and urged both nations to avoid further escalation.Â
Netanyahu has reportedly been in contact with global leaders including Germany’s Chancellor, France’s President, US President Donald Trump, UK PM Keir Starmer, and Russia’s Vladimir Putin. Officials say the US, while aware of the strikes, confirmed it had no direct involvement and cautioned Iran against targeting American assets.Â
The strikes mark a dramatic escalation in the longstanding Israel-Iran standoff—Profoundly affecting geopolitical dynamics. Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei denounced the strikes as a “declaration of war,” pledging militant retaliation. Iranian forces reportedly launched over 100 drones at Israel, most intercepted successfully.Â

Financial markets also reacted sharply: Brent crude surged over 7%, while airlines initiated emergency reroutes and flight cancellations due to the uncertain regional outlook.Â
