‘Politics Over Peace’: White House Slams Nobel Committee After Trump Misses Out On Peace Prize

The White House on Friday launched a scathing attack on the Nobel Committee, accusing it of political bias after US President Donald Trump was overlooked for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. The prestigious award was instead given to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado, prompting a furious reaction from the Trump administration, which claimed the decision was a case of “politics over peace.”

In a post on X, White House Director of Communications Steven Cheung said, “Once again, the Nobel Committee has proved they place politics over peace,” adding that the omission reflected “bias rather than a genuine commitment to global peace.”

He asserted that President Trump would “continue making peace deals around the world, ending wars and saving lives,” regardless of the recognition.Hours before the announcement, Trump himself took aim at former US President Barack Obama, who won the prize in 2009. Trump claimed Obama received the award “for doing nothing” and for “destroying our country.” The current president has repeatedly pointed to his administration’s role in brokering peace in Gaza and his claims of “ending eight wars” as justification for why he should be honored.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the 2025 prize to María Corina Machado for her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” She joins a select group of laureates recognized for their pro-democracy efforts in the face of authoritarianism. To date, four US presidents have received the Nobel Peace Prize: Theodore Roosevelt in 1906, Woodrow Wilson in 1919, Jimmy Carter in 2002, and Barack Obama in 2009.
