Putin Agrees On US 30-Day Ceasefire Proposal for Ukraine, Seeks Lasting Peace

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday endorsed a US-proposed 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, emphasizing it must pave the way for long-term peace and resolve the conflict’s underlying issues. Speaking after talks with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, Putin welcomed the initiative but called for further discussions with American counterparts. The statement follows US President Donald Trump’s push to halt the three-year war, which has seen Russian forces control nearly a fifth of Ukraine.

At a Kremlin news conference, Putin said, “We agree with the proposals to cease hostilities.” He stressed the need for a ceasefire that ensures lasting stability. “It should eliminate the original causes of this crisis,” he added, as per Reuters.

Trump, speaking at the White House on Wednesday, urged Russia to back the 30-day ceasefire proposal Kyiv has accepted. “We hope the Kremlin will agree to end this bloodbath,” Trump said. He highlighted his intent to stop the war that began in 2022.

Putin expressed appreciation for Trump’s efforts, stating, “The idea itself is correct, and we certainly support it.” He hinted at a possible call with Trump, adding, “We need to talk to our American colleagues as well.” Putin underscored Russia’s openness to peaceful resolutions.

The remarks come as Russian forces advance in Ukraine, holding nearly 20% of its territory since mid-2024. Putin’s visit to a Kursk command post on Wednesday, clad in camouflage, underscored Moscow’s ongoing offensive. Ukraine is reportedly losing ground in the region.

With Putin favoring the ceasefire but seeking clarity on terms, diplomatic talks between Moscow and Washington are expected soon. The outcome hinges on whether both sides can align on addressing the war’s root causes. Updates on negotiations are anticipated in the coming days.
