Putin Trying to 'Sell' Ceasefire for 'Highest Price,' Says Zelenskyy Ahead of US-Russia Summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday launched a sharp critique of his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, accusing him of attempting to leverage an end to the violence for maximum gain ahead of a high-stakes meeting with US President Donald Trump. In a video message posted on X, Zelenskyy asserted that while Ukraine and its allies are united in their desire for peace, Putin remains the sole obstacle.

“First and foremost, there must be a just end to the war, and it depends on Russia. It is Russia that must end the war it started,” Zelenskyy stated firmly. He argued that there is a shared understanding among Ukraine and its partners on the necessity of a ceasefire, but Putin is playing a different game. “Only one actor stands against this, Putin. His only card is the ability to kill, and he is trying to sell the cessation of killings at the highest possible price,” he declared.

The Ukrainian leader reiterated his country’s unwavering stance on its territorial integrity, stating unequivocally, “Ukraine will not give land to the occupier,” and will not offer Russia “any awards for what it has done.” Expressing full confidence in American leadership to broker an end to the conflict, Zelenskyy added, “I have not heard any partners express doubts about America’s ability to ensure that the war ends.

The President of the United States has the levers and the determination.” He also highlighted Ukraine’s consistent backing of peace initiatives proposed by the US, noting, “Ukraine has supported all of President Trump’s proposals, starting back in February. Ceasefire, all formats have been supported.”
