'Savage': Zelenskyy Says 30 Killed In Russian Drone Strike On Ukraine Railway Station

At least 30 people were killed in what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as a “savage” Russian drone strike that targeted a railway station in the northern Sumy region on Saturday. The deadly attack, which hit a train bound for Kyiv, drew immediate international condemnation and a furious response from Zelenskyy, who called it an act of terrorism that the world must not ignore.

In a social media post accompanied by a video of a mangled, burning train carriage, Zelenskyy confirmed that the strike hit the railway station in the city of Shostka. “A savage Russian drone strike… All emergency services are already on the scene and have begun helping people,” he wrote, adding that both railway staff and passengers were among the victims. Expressing frustration over derailed peace talks, he demanded strong international action against Moscow. “The Russians could not have been unaware that they were striking civilians… Lip service is not enough now. Strong action is needed,” Zelenskyy declared.

The attack is the latest in an intensified Russian campaign against Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, particularly its railway and energy networks, as the fourth winter of the war approaches. Just a day earlier, Russia launched a massive missile and drone assault on facilities belonging to the state gas and oil company Naftogaz, causing what its CEO described as “critical damage.” The Russian Defence Ministry confirmed it had carried out strikes on Ukraine’s energy and military-industrial facilities. The escalating conflict comes amid a diplomatic stalemate, with peace negotiations paused last month.

While Zelenskyy continues to press for direct talks with his Russian counterpart and tighter international sanctions, US President Donald Trump has positioned himself as a potential peace broker, encouraging a meeting between the two leaders and warning of further sanctions on Russia if the war does not end. In response to the relentless attacks, Kyiv has also stepped up its own strikes on oil refineries deep inside Russia.
