'Treated Worse Than Terrorist': Imran Khan Accuses Army Chief Asim Munir Of ‘Mistreatment’ In Jail

In a dramatic escalation from behind bars, former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan on Friday issued a stark warning from Adiala Jail, directly accusing Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir of orchestrating his “mistreatment” and holding him “responsible” if anything were to happen to him in prison.

The 72-year-old PTI founder, in a lengthy statement posted on the social media platform X, claimed his and his wife Bushra Bibi’s basic human rights were being systematically stripped away and that he was being treated “worse than a convicted terrorist.”

“In recent days, the harsh treatment I face in jail has intensified. The same applies to my wife, Bushra Bibi… All basic rights — both human and those legally granted to prisoners — have been suspended for both of us,” the post read.

Khan, who has been incarcerated since August 2023 on multiple charges, directly instructed his party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), on whom to hold accountable. “I give clear instructions to my party — if anything happens to me in jail, Asim Munir must be held accountable,” he stated, adding, “I am ready to spend my life in jail, but I will never bow to tyranny.”

The former premier alleged the crackdown stems from a “personal grudge” held by the powerful army chief. Khan claimed that when Munir was removed as the head of the ISI, he had requested a meeting with Bushra Bibi, which she refused. “Since then, Asim Munir has had a personal grudge and is now inflicting this cruelty to emotionally break me,” Khan alleged.

The statement comes as the PTI prepares to launch a nationwide campaign on August 5 demanding the former prime minister’s release.

Asim Munir, who prefers to operate from behind the scenes, was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal in May for his role in the recent conflict with India. He was widely projected as a national hero following the deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam in April.
