Trump Admin Threatens To Cut All Harvard Funding Over Alleged Anti-Semitism
The Trump administration on Monday threatened to cut all federal funding to Harvard University, declaring that a government investigation had found the Ivy League school in violation of civil rights laws for failing to protect Jewish students from discrimination and harassment.
In a letter sent to the university, administration officials said their investigation concluded that Harvard was at times a “willful participant in anti-Semitic harassment of Jewish students, faculty, and staff,” and that campus leaders had allowed anti-Semitism to fester.
The letter warns that a “failure to institute adequate changes immediately will result in the loss of all federal financial resources and continue to affect Harvard’s relationship with the federal government,” The Associated Press reported.
This development is the latest and most severe escalation in a protracted and bitter dispute between President Donald Trump and the prestigious university. Harvard has already lost more than $2.6 billion in federal research funding after it rejected a list of sweeping demands from the White House that called for a massive overhaul of its campus hiring, admissions, and governance policies.
The conflict had previously centered on international students. In May, the administration revoked Harvard’s certification to enroll foreign students, a move the university is fighting in court, calling it an unconstitutional retaliation for resisting political demands. Trump had publicly suggested that elite universities like Harvard should cap the number of foreign students to make way for more Americans.
The threat comes just over a week after President Trump had hinted at a potential truce. In a post on his Truth Social platform, he suggested that settlement talks were underway and could result in a “‘mindbogglingly’ HISTORIC” deal that would be “very good for our Country.”
However, Monday’s letter indicates that the dispute is far from over. It accuses Harvard of violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which requires colleges receiving federal funds to protect students from discrimination. While Harvard has not yet issued a formal response to the latest threat, the finding sets the stage for either a negotiated agreement or an unprecedented attempt by the federal government to completely defund one of the nation’s top academic institutions
