US President Donald Trump has raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 245%, escalating the trade conflict after Beijing imposed countermeasures targeting American aviation firms.

In a dramatic escalation of the US-China trade war, President Donald Trump has increased tariffs on Chinese imports to a total of 245%, citing Beijing’s retaliatory actions as the trigger. The White House issued a fact sheet announcing the hike, stating that China’s counter-tariffs and restrictions on US companies had prompted this move.

“More than 75 countries have already reached out to discuss new trade deals… China now faces up to a 245% tariff on imports to the United States as a result of its retaliatory actions,” the White House said.

Beijing’s latest retaliatory step involved instructing Chinese airlines to stop accepting deliveries of Boeing aircraft and US aviation parts, in response to the earlier 145% US tariff. The move targeted one of America’s largest manufacturing sectors and marked a serious intensification of the trade dispute.

Speaking on the situation, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, “The ball is in China’s court. China needs to make a deal with us. We don’t have to make a deal with them.”

In response, China reiterated its commitment to dialogue but warned that it would not yield to “extreme pressure.”

“We do not seek confrontation, but we will not remain silent,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian. “If the US really wants to resolve the issue… it should stop threatening and blackmailing, and talk to China on the basis of equality.”

Zhang Xiaogang, another spokesperson, added, “Tariff hikes on Chinese goods will not restore American greatness.”

The US has significantly increased tariffs on Chinese goods, starting with a 145% hike. China responded with a 125% tax on American products, sparking tit-for-tat measures from both sides. Trump also introduced a 10% general tariff on various trade partners, tightening his broader protectionist agenda.

The trade tensions have rattled global markets and raised concerns among economists about disruptions in the global supply chain.

With both nations entrenched in their positions, analysts believe the situation could deteriorate further unless high-level talks are resumed. While Washington remains firm on its demand for a new trade deal, China has signaled it is open to negotiations—but only on equal terms.
