Trump says Israel and Iran “will make a deal,” likening it to India–Pakistan pact
Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Sunday to urge a peace deal between Israel and Iran, asserting it would mirror the India–Pakistan agreement he claimed to have brokered via US leverage. His comments came alongside mounting military exchanges between the two nations.
“Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal, just like I got India and Pakistan to make,” Trump wrote, adding that “we will have PEACE, soon.” He referenced past interventions—Serbia–Kosovo, Egypt–Ethiopia dams—and described ongoing talks behind the scenes.
Israel and Iran traded intense strikes over the weekend. Israel’s Operation Rising Lion targeted Iran’s defence ministry and nuclear-linked facilities, while Iran fired hundreds of missiles and drones at Israeli cities, resulting in dozens of civilian deaths.
Trump claimed the US is “not involved” militarily but threatened Iran with “full strength” retaliation if American assets are hit. He reiterated expectations for peace negotiations and hinted at behind-the-scenes mediation involving Russia.
Israel’s envoy to the US, Yechiel Leiter, and military officials deny any diplomatic breakthrough is imminent. They stress Israel’s campaign is focused on neutralising Iran’s nuclear and military capabilities.
At the SCO summit, India urged restraint and emphasized diplomacy, refraining from condemning Israel. Global leaders including France’s Macron have called for de-escalation.
The renewed conflict is among the most severe in years. Thousands of missiles have been exchanged, and civilian casualties continue to mount. Analysts warn further military escalation could draw the US deeper and threaten regional stability
