Trump Sees ‘Very Good Chance’ to End Ukraine War Speaks To Putin

US President Donald Trump, after a “productive” call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, expressed optimism about ending the Ukraine war, urging Putin to spare surrounded Ukrainian troops. The discussion follows a US-proposed 30-day ceasefire, already backed by Ukraine.

Trump announced the development on Truth Social, highlighting a “very good chance” to halt the war that began in February 2022. He emphasized the urgency, noting thousands of Ukrainian soldiers are currently encircled by Russian forces. The talks signal a potential breakthrough as both nations explore ceasefire possibilities.

“I have strongly requested to President Putin that their lives be spared,” Trump wrote. He warned of a potential “horrible massacre” unseen since World War II if the situation escalates. He added a prayer for the troops: “God bless them all!!!”

On Thursday, Putin responded to the US ceasefire proposal during a press meet with Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. “We agree with the proposal for a ceasefire, but it should lead to enduring peace,” he said. He questioned Ukrainian compliance and how violations would be managed along the 2,000-km front.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Moscow’s cautious stance. “Russia seeks to prolong the war and postpone peace for as long as possible,” he stated, noting the lack of a clear Russian response. The remarks reflect Kyiv’s frustration with the ongoing deadlock.

Putin stressed the need for further talks, suggesting a direct call with Trump to address unresolved issues. He asked, “Who would ensure enforcement of the deal?” The US proposal emerged from recent Saudi Arabia talks, where Ukraine agreed to the 30-day truce.

The Trump-Putin dialogue marks a critical step toward peace, but challenges remain. Further negotiations are expected to clarify enforcement and terms, with a potential phone call on the horizon. Updates on the ceasefire’s progress are anticipated as discussions continue.
