US Urges India, Pakistan to Seek Responsible Resolution After Pahalgam Attack

Amid escalating tensions following the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26, the United States has urged India and Pakistan to work towards a “responsible resolution,” reaffirming support for India.

The United States on Sunday called on India and Pakistan to pursue a “responsible resolution” after the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam. The assault, which targeted unarmed tourists, left 26 people dead and sparked a series of diplomatic escalations between the two countries.

A US State Department spokesperson, in a statement to Reuters, said Washington has been “in contact with both governments at multiple levels” and is closely monitoring the situation.

“The United States encourages all parties to work together towards a responsible resolution,” the spokesperson added, while reiterating, “We stand with India,” echoing remarks by President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

Following the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to identify and punish the perpetrators, describing the assault as an attack not just on the victims, but on India’s sovereignty. India responded with a slew of diplomatic measures, including:

  • Suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty
  • Closure of the Integrated Check Post at Attari
  • Suspension of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme for Pakistani nationals, ordering them to leave within 40 hours

The Indian government also reduced staff at Pakistan’s High Commission and demanded reciprocal action.

Pakistan rejected India’s allegations, calling them “frivolous,” and warned of retaliatory measures. Islamabad proposed a neutral investigation, suggesting an international team including experts from China, Russia, or Western nations.

China voiced support for Pakistan’s call, with its Ministry of Foreign Affairs backing an “impartial probe” after a phone conversation between Pakistan Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his government’s willingness to participate in any neutral inquiry into the incident.

The Pahalgam terror attack is the deadliest in Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama attack. It was claimed by The Resistance Front, believed to be a proxy for the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba group based in Pakistan.

Indian authorities released images of three gunmen who opened fire at tourists in the popular Baisaran meadow. Security agencies have launched a massive manhunt and are tightening surveillance across the Kashmir Valley.
